Sugarcane growers and regional farmer unions staged a major highway blockade (Rasta Roko) along the Hubballi–Belagavi stretch of the Pune–Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48). The mass demonstration came following the breakdown of talks with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi regarding fair crop pricing.
Key protest choke points included strategic locations like the Gabbur Bypass, M.K. Hubballi, and major toll plazas including Hire Bagewadi and Hattaragi. Protesters brought vehicular traffic to a near standstill, demanding an increase in the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane to ₹5,500 per tonne, a domestic sugar Minimum Support Price (MSP) revision to ₹60 per kg, strict action against weighbridge discrepancies in sugar mills, and immediate clearance of pending dues.
The widespread blockade forced the local traffic police to deploy heavy security and issue emergency route diversions through Khanapur, Alnavar, and Gokak for both heavy transport and light commuter motor vehicles. Protesting leaders warned that agitations will intensify statewide unless their demands are formally addressed.
